After the Final Word discussion on The Art of Being Human selection, students answered one of the prompts with at least one page in their notebook.
1. What positive and negative effects does industry have on a person’s life as a worker and as a consumer?
2. What mechanical device can you not live without? Is there a piece of technology that is controlling your life?
3. Are medical researchers playing God? What medical advances go too far?
4. What are you doing to show stewardship towards the earth? How are you going green?
5. What Frankensteins have been created in our world? In other words, what technological advancements do you feel have been abused and why?

Yes in some aspects scientists are getting to a point where they are playing God's role. Cloning is an example that has risen much attention in the past years. Many disagree with this subject of experiment. Is this unethical? Or could this be a path way to discover new findings (such as cures to diseases) that will enhance and prosper the human life?
1. There are many different ways the industry has effected our lives as consumers whether it's negatively or positively. Living life in general as a consumer has been made really simple, from coffee at caribou to dinner at noodles spending money has never been easier. On the other hand consumerism is a negative on our industry because the strain on our recources. It is wasteful not only of our enviornment but money aswell. In order to change this we need to change the way we consume.
I worry that in the science of genetic engineering, if we give scientists and researchers an inch, they'll run with it the whole mile. If a researcher is trying to find a cure for cancer and genetic engineering is the way to go--more power to them. However, it makes me nervous to think that having accomplished this--or possibly even before accomplishing this--scientists will be looking into being able to let a parent pick out the sex, height, eye-color, hair-color, even skin color of their unborn child. Maybe they'll hard-wire their soon-to-be offspring to be a District Attorney when they grow up--as if this child they're bringing into the world is a car that they can pick and choose the color and model for. And when you decide that you think bright green eyes and jet black hair would look absolutely stunning on your child don't be surprised if when they get older they decide to dye their hair blonde and get blue contact lenses. Now I'm just being a little bit sarcastic, but really. It also begs the question of who will get the reap the benefits of this new technology if it ever comes about--certainly not the already poor and disadvantaged portion of our population. No. They'll have to live life the old fashioned way while those who are better off get to start their new superhuman race.
I feel like Technology has really changed society. I cant even imagine living without a computer .. ipod.. or tv but sometimes I worry that we will/have become to dependent on technology. If something went wrong and we lost all of our electricity for more than a week we would have to resort back to board games, books, annnd no tv.
The electronic device I can't live without would have to be my gameboy. It is what I look forward to doing everyday. In essence, its controlling my life. I have no idea what I would do without it.
I used to not recycle my things and just throw them in the garbage. Also, sometimes I see people dump lots of garbage in Minnehaha Creek and I think it is discusting, but I would let it be. Same with people leaving dog poop all over the place. Then I decided to go green. I always recycle, and I won't let people get away with making the creek a dumpster. Also, I don't like dog poopie all over the place so I will not be happy if I see people leaving it around!!!!! There are so many ways you can help keep the earth clean and it doesn't take much energy. A simple thing to do is unplug computers or turn off power strips at night. They drain a lot of power even when off. I definately encourage everyone to start preserving the environment.

I think that the advances in technology has both hurt and helped society. Advances in things such as medical, economic, and transportation have allowed for easier and better ways of solving problems. ON the other hand, I think the advances in ways such as cars that parallel park for you, and automatic banking has caused people to be much lazier and much more dependent on technology. With all of these material advances people will slowly but surely forget how to do things on their own and become so dependent on technology that there won't be much left for them to do for themselves. HOwever, the advances in medical technology and important things like that allow for more illnesses to be cured and more treatments to be effective on specific illnesses. Overall, some technology serves it's main purpose and helps society with important issues, but other technology is really starting to become worthless.
Technology has definitely had a huge impact on our society. It seems like people are always watching TV and talking on their cell phones, and people think that they always have to have the newest technology that's out. I would say that I definitely spend a lot of time on my phone and listening to my ipod. I really have no idea what i would do without them since I'm so used to always having them around.
I didn't know where this post would fit in so I'm just putting in on the most recent thread. I, along with some others, was wondering whether or not Ford was alive when BNW was published. Ford, in fact, was alive until 1947, while the book was published in 1932. . .I'm sure Ford read BNW and it would have been interesting to see his reaction to his god-like role in the book
3. I agree with the fact that medical researchers are playing God by creating life unnaturally. This is causing controversy because this issue has to deal with nature vs. nurture. Anyone should be living in a world where there is conception and such. Also they should be living in an enviorment where things are natural and healthy meaning living with parents and going to school. Some ways where medical researchers have gone to far is probably cloning. I feel like its even wrong to clone animals because it is unnatural in so many way. People should be able to live in a society with things that are real and not artifical.
Technology these days have become so advanced and complex, it's hard to imagine what life will be like 10, 20 or 30 years from now. After talking with india (now israel)(in 6th hour), we all came to a conclusion that we are capable of going without all the technology; however, our society today has made it a bare necessity. But what would life be like if phones, ipods or video games were nonexistant? I think we wouldn't look at the world as "lame" or "boring" - to be honest, I think we would appreciate more important things such as relationships. If we didn't know if those things could even exist, then how would we be unappreciative? Not to be cliche, but in this situation, ignorance would truley be bliss.
