Classroom norms (or rules) were developed on September 10, 2007. The class as a whole created a tree map of specific details for the classroom motto--Work, Respect, Belong--with each word in the motto getting its own branch of the tree map.
Hour 1 Norms
Work----Group Effort, Be on Task, Attempt to do Tasks, Read
Respect---courtesy, don't talk when others have the floor, respect cultural differences, respect other's possessions
Belong----Contribute, share ideas, positive affirmation
Hour 2 Norms
Work---complete on time, read, be thoughtful
Respect---treat others as you wished to be treated, respect other's property, don't tattle--talk directly to people that you have problems with, don't discriminate, don't talk when others are talking
Belong---work in your base group, participate, include everyone
Hour 6 Norms
Work---cooperate, participate, put forth effort, be on task, read
Respect---cooperate, respect opinions, treat others as you wish to be treated, embrace equity and diversity
Belong----cooperate, participate, relax, have fun

Aldous Huxley is a famous hero in Mrs. Roehl's class because of "Brave New World," but he has contributed much more than just this novel to the literary canon. Not only did he write 11 other novels satirizing everything from social norms to fashion, but he also is well known for his extensive essay writing, short stories, poetry, and drama. With such an impressive background, it is clear why we are studying his works.
P.S. : I really hope this blog puts me into consideration for the "blog star" designation.
I think it’s interesting that Huxley's "Brave New World" involved similar ideas to those of Hitler. I mean the thought of such a tyrannical environment is so immoral; especially conditioning babies to hate flowers and books. I wonder if there is a connection between the concepts of this novel and Hitler’s actions. He was making people believe themselves superior to others, and he was also forcing concentration camp captives to work for him. The only apparent difference is that the captives were not happy or conditioned to do Hitler’s bidding and soldiers were also not conditioned.
Although that this blog message isnt really about Huxley but about "Work Respect and Belong". I also think that Huxley is a very interesting man. He was obviously a man well ahead of his time. Then again it could have been all of the drugs he did while he was living. I also thought it was interesting that he was tripping out on acid when he died.
I agree with Cashin. Huxley seemed way ahead of his time to come up with an unusual book like this. It is hard for me to enjoy "Brave New World" becuase i find the way these humans are created and raised to weird. I am sure i will like it better as i read more pages.
I agree with many of my classmates that Huxley was wasy ahead of his time with "Brave new World." A lot of his ideas have already played out and it will be interesting to see if we develop even more of his ideas in the future. At this point in the book i am still having a hard time understanding everything but am slowly getting used to the terminology. I am looking forward to getting farther in the book and seeing other ideas of his that could have already or could become reality in the future.
I also agree with most grace. I think that Huxley was way ahead of his time to be comming up with what he is writing about which makes it very hard for me to follow at times. I find the "new world" to be very weird, however, maybe as the book goes on i will get more into it.
I think that Huxley is pretty much a genious in the sense that he is able to create a book that shows what the future may bring with so many technological innovations. As we saw in the SHIFT HAPPENS video computers may eventually be able to have the capabilities of the human brain. Thus it would not be unusual if the future brings such a society in which peoples lives are dictated by what others ideas and what they seem best for the human race.
Yeah i would agree with all of you that Huxley was very smart individual, to be able to think this far into the future and to be so accurate. He was right-on wich is amazing and un real, i Think Huxley's book "Brave New World" is very strange and i can only imagine the controversy that it brought up back in his time....
Huxley was a pacifist. Which means his belief prevented him from becoming an American citizen because he would not admitt to say that his pacifism was a matter of his religion. I find this somewhat strange that he prevented himself from being an American Citizen yet during his life he lived in America.
Aldous Huxley is interesting to me because I find it strange that he was able to write 12 exceptional books while frequently under the influence of hard drugs. It is rare that someone addicted to drugs is able to live a normal life let alone a successful one

I would agree with most of my classmates that Huxley was a very inteligent individual. He thought of such a futuristic book while writing during the 1930's, most humans can't even imagine what the future would be like. If i were to write a book now about the future i wouldnt know where to start, so for a man to imagine the future, and then to write about it, that takes a truly intelligent human being.
